Farewell to Kings is my personal favorite. Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, 2112, and Grace Under Pressure are also all fantastic. These are mostly from their progressive phase, as opposed to their synth and modern phases. They're rough distinctions between the musical trends in the band's lifetime. Most people like their progressive rock phase the best, as do I.

Ok, I've been listening to the majority of their albums in its entirety, I am at Hold Your Fire atm and going forward from there. This is a rather addicting band to listen to. I'm enjoying it very much.

Yeah, Rush has one of my favorite discographies. They have such a fascinating history because they (aside from the very beginning) retained the same membership throughout and yet changed their sound quite a bit over time. They were generally pretty good at keep the "Rush sound" but changing a lot of the features around it. They definitely have some highs and lows but it's a fascinating career to watch.

It really has been a fascinating career to watch, and that watching the documentary, "Rush: Behind the Lighted Stage," made me really like these guys, as musicians and people, and see what their music, history, and fans are all about.

Here's a question. What do you think is Rush's weakest effort? I'd prob go for Hold Your Fire. Test For Echo comes close though.

How dare you say exactly what I was going to say. But yeah, I think those are the weakest ones even though there are some great songs on both. Presto isn't too great either. I'd probably pick Test For Echo over Hold Your Fire. At least the bad songs on HYF are fun bad. TFE is just kinda bland for the most part.

I think this sums it up actually. It's sort of why I didn't initially get I think. They're not at their most ambitious in terms of musicianship but once you give it time. Things start to stand out and the vocal delivery does feel very genuine.
This story is what makes Clockwork Angels such an important release for Rush. The strong themes and narrative arcs reveal a freshness in the band’s songwriting I haven’t heard in a long time. If you focus solely on the music, you won’t find much that distinguishes Clockwork Angels from Rush’s greatest feats. Sure, Lee’s ability to hit those high notes while managing to run his fingers up and down the fretboard is impressive, and Lifeson’s guitar solos are ever-difficult, but you know that about Rush. But through taking their requisite musical skills and channeling them into a story with real depth, they’ve produced the best LP they’ve made in over twenty years; I can easily see this attaining a cult following amongst devoted fans. This record is one that doesn’t merely rely on flashy displays of musicanship and portentous song structures; there is a depth to Clockwork Angels that demands attention beyond a casual listen. Reading the liner notes and analyzing the story are an absolute must to appreciate what’s going on here. Best of all, in doing so you’re likely to discover a real vitality in Rush, one I think fans new and old will find to be a real breath of fresh air. We’re two years away from Rush having existed for forty years, and it’s with great pleasure I can say they haven’t lost their stride yet. It may be hard to recapture the glory days, but for musicians as talented as these three, it isn’t difficult to keep putting out quality material.

Damn, I listened to Clockwork Angels in its entirety, about two weeks ago, and since then, I can't really stop listening to the songs. If I had listened to this in 2012, as I should have, I would have pegged it as my 2nd favorite album to listen to (behind Tremonti's All I Was) that year.

Such a bloody great album from three guys that could do the nostalgic band route, like most classic rock bands does, and play only greatest hits and rarely play from their latest album and no one would have an argument. They only did that, arguably, once for that Time Machine Tour. However, for these guys, their current setlist are so crafted with plenty of songs from Clockwork Angels and, even a few deeper rarely played tracks. Also, the fact that these are the guys looking forward and not rest on their laurels and create an album that could stack up to their most critically-acclaimed albums in the late 70s and 80s shows that Rush could be indeed a perfect professional band.

Favorite songs from the album: Clockwork Angels, BU2B, Seven Cities of Gold, Halo Effect, and The Garden.

All righty, rebumping this thread. Wow, I did not really expect a band who's current line-up is almost 40 years old to be my 3rd favorite band for right now. I just can't get enough of the songs and the live performances of their live DVDs of the 2000s.

Once they announce a date for the Clockwork Angels DVD, I'm definitely buying that.

AUDIO AND VIDEO RELEASES INCLUDE EPIC VERSIONS OF SONGS RARELY PERFORMED AND NEVER-BEFORE CAPTURED ALONGSIDE NEWLY REWORKED ARRANGEMENTS SPECIFICALLY FOR THE CLOCKWORK ANGELS TOUR;
BLURAY/DVD INCLUDES EXCLUSIVE BACKSTAGE TOUR DOCUMENTARY, SOUNDCHECK FOOTAGE, AND TOUR FILM OUTTAKES IN ADDITION TO THE 3 HOUR CONCERT FILM

Rush have unveiled details for their first new recording since being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame earlier this year. On November 19th, “RUSH: CLOCKWORK ANGELS TOUR” will be released simultaneously via Anthem/Roadrunner Records on CD and the companion BLURAY/DVD on Anthem/Zoe Vision/Rounder.

“RUSH: CLOCKWORK ANGELS TOUR” was filmed and recorded last November at the American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Texas, during Rush’s highly successful Clockwork Angels Tour. The eleven month-marathon world tour crossed North America twice and ventured overseas to Europe in support of the band’s acclaimed 2012 studio release “CLOCKWORK ANGELS.”

In capturing the tour’s electrifying three hour set, “RUSH: CLOCKWORK ANGELS TOUR” pairs Rush classics (“Tom Sawyer,” “The Spirit Of Radio,” “2112″), with a nod to the 80′s Rush era (The Analog Kid,” “Territories,” “Subdivisions”) alongside newly reworked arrangements specifically for the tour featuring the Clockwork Angels String Ensemble (“Headlong Flight,” “YYZ,” “Red Sector A”). The string section marks the first time the trio has brought additional musicians on the road with them. To showcase their latest studio release, the epic set list also features nine tracks off “CLOCKWORK ANGELS.” Other highlights include tracks rarely performed and never before recorded live (“The Body Electric,” “Middletown Dreams”), in addition to three separate drum solos by the incomparable Neil Peart.

Beyond the incredible live performances, the DVD includes a 25-minute tour documentary titled “Can’t Stop Thinking Big”, featuring interviews with all 3 members, exclusive and behind the scenes footage, and offers a glimpse into the inner workings of the Rush tour machine and insight into the band members themselves. Other special features on the DVD include the trio of hilarious shorts created specifically for the tour as well as interviews and outtakes captured during their filming. Additional filmed sketches and a rare soundcheck performance of perennial favourite “Limelight” round out the exclusive offerings.

“RUSH: CLOCKWORK ANGELS TOUR” comes on the heels of Anthem/Atlantic’s September 30th release of “VAPOR TRAILS REMIXED,” a newly remixed version of the band’s 2002 album VAPOR TRAILS and 7-disc boxed set “THE STUDIO ALBUMS 1989-2007,” which features every studio album Rush recorded for Atlantic Records.
