For Folk's Sake - TABN Folk Music Thread

Post by NytestrykerZ »

Rather than get into individual threads I figured posting an all-encompassing thread would be a cool idea. Get some discussions and recommendations going on. There's some great modern stuff going on these days but also feel free to post some of the classic stuff if it tickles your fancy. Here's a few new artists I've gotten into over the past couple years:

Glen Hansard/The Swell Season
One of my favorites, Glen just released his solo album this week with some great tunes. His work with Marketa Irglove in the Swell Season is worth checking out as well. A lot of songs by his original band The Frames walk the line of folk too.

City & Colour
A fellow Canadian who's music often bridges into alt-rock and alt-country. A great deal of his stuff is very laid back acoustic based but the electric tunes are great as well. Former guitarist/backup singer for post-hardcore/screamo band Alexisonfire.

Laura Marling
British songbird with some great instrumentals, lyrics, and a weathered voice on some tunes. Oft likened to Joni Mitchell.

I was going to add Mumford & Sons as well but everyone and their mum has heard of them. Good tunes.

Hope for more posts.

I have no idea if these are well known bands in the genre or not, they probably are.

I'm not familiar with any of them except the Civil Wars who are gaining notoriety stateside. I believe I listened to Dry The River in the music thread here and quite liked it. That was with the guy that sounded quite Buckleyesque right? I'll check out the rest when I'm not at work.

J. Tillman is great. He was probably my favorite vocalist in the Fleet Foxes. This tune sticks out to me.

Makes sense he left though. He's a great singer and I haven't gotten 'Helplessness Blues' yet. Something about it just doesn't jive for me like the self-titled did.

Discovered Tristan Prettyman earlier this year through a buddy at work, and I think I'm kinda in love:

Yeah, I really really like the debut. I haven't listened to the second album yet.

The Tallest Man on Earth is my favorite folk artist. Shallow Grave, The Wild Hunt, and There's No Leaving Now is like the perfect sequence of albums. I absolutely love the intricacy between his acoustic guitar and his vocals. Plus, his lyrics are incredibly awesome.

I also love Right Away, Great Captain!, Mumford & Sons, Nick Drake, Midlake, The Avett Brothers, Fleet Foxes, and Shearwater.

I've heard a lot of good things about The Tallest Man on Earth, will need to check it out sometime soon. The Wild Hunt was voted the best album of 2010 on Sputnik I'm sure.

Fleet Foxes, Dry the River and City & Colour are all amazing, though I thought C&C's latest (LITTLE HELL) was disappointing. Are we counting Mumford & Sons in this? Because SIGH NO MORE is fantastic.

The Civil Wars are amazing - the chemistry between those two is one in a million.
More singer-songwriter than folk, but I think it fits here.

I don't know if they classify as folk to the rest of you but I'm a fan of

Neko Case unclassifiable dark folk alt country, incredible voice
Things That Scare Me off Blacklisted

Ani DiFranco ditto with a lot of politics, a force of nature. I especially like the Dilate (best breakup album ever) and Living in Clip (live) albums, though they're less political and Dilate is more produced than most of her work.

the Civil Wars song above reminds me a little of the Robert Plant / Allison Krauss album Raising Sand.

And if you haven't heard that one, look it up.
