There's a song on youtube called 'The Birthday Party', which is basically an instrumental version of 'The Watchmaker'. Any chance you listened to that?

This is the real song:

Yeup, probably.

Well, this one doesn't have a shitload of vocals either. :lol Still a good song, though.

Have you guys heard that SW left Blackfield? He's playing the last show with them in May. I thought he wanted to make more room for PT in his rather tight schedule, but apparently he is going to focus on his solo stuff even more.

What is up with PT is what I want to know? Almost 5 years have passed & nothing new. :/

SW is too much obsessed with his jazz-oriented solo stuff which is, let's face it, quite boring. I'd rather he focused on PT, but nothing can really force him to do so.

I'm cool with whatever Steven decides to do, being a huge fan of his solo project. The new song they played in Leuven when I saw them sounded very promising.

Double post, sorry.

I'll make it up by adding this:

Pretty much. SW is finally proving what most progressive rock musicians eventually do in their careers: there is such a thing as overindulgence.

This one has arguably the best keyboard intro ever written. Pure magic.

I will check out whatever comes out from him, but if he continues with this 70s type prog rock I don't think I will dig it. I'd love to hear something like In Absentia, Fear of the Blank Planet or The Incident.

Sounds a lot more interesting both musically and production wise than The Raven. It's good to hear that it's more representative of Steven's overall work, the pop song sounds really interesting. I just wish we had any prospects of more Porcupine Tree stuff...

This sounds very good so far. I didn't like Raven that much, hopefully this one is going to be much more interesting.

Less 70's prog and jazz will make some people happy.

Absolutely loved that last song with the female singer. I'm so excited about this record.

I'm intrigued. I'm glad to know The Raven was initially planned as a "vintage" 1972 type album. Personally, I found it pretty stale and derivative for that reason but it's good to know he didn't go into it planning some truly progressive/innovative thing. I'm happy to know they might be pushing away from jazz too. I love jazz but I don't think they played it well.

Admittedly, the actual snippets don't interest me too much. They still sound a little too calculated, a little too much like a studio super group than a band with real chemistry and soul to me. I'm hopeful though.

I like this concept. I like that he's taking a more reserved approach to building concept albums. A lot of concept albums (from other bands especially) have been sunk by taking on concepts that were too large. I like that this one is almost more of a theme or idea to explore. I'm a little wary of the lyrics because I doubt he can write too well from a woman's perspective but I won't dismiss it yet. I'm excited by the extra vocals too. Seems like he takes more of a backstage coordinator direction for each album.

The music in that video got me quite excited. I might try and see him when he comes to Cardiff! I was tempted to go to one of his gigs the last time he had been touring, but by the time he came over, I had lost my enthusiasm for Raven.

I just heard the new single (the title track). It's very poppy, very different from Raven, but I absolutely love it.

(You can buy it on Itunes)
