WHEN YOU DON’T WATCH YOUR STEP AND THEN...
MYLES KENNEDY, ALTER BRIDGE

“There was one shitty gig with The Mayfield Four I did back in like ‘99, when we were on tour with Fuel. We were playing in San Francisco, we weren’t firing on all cylinders, and I was trying to up the energy. I was rocking out and I was trying to lose myself in the performance, and the next thing you know I’ve tripped over my pedal board, and I’ve fallen on my ass right in front of the crowd. It was a total buzzkill. And for the next week I couldn’t get out of bed because I injured my lower back. It was one of those super embarrassing moments where nothing seems to be working right, but you’ve just got to grin and bear it. You win some, you lose some, I guess.”

ALTER BRIDGE
MYLES KENNEDY’S ARENA-CONQUERING CHARGES RETURN

Hey, Myles! You must be itching to play songs from your new album, Walk The Sky, for the first time in the UK…
“The UK is such an important place for us; I’ve said it a few times, but when we first started and tried to develop an international following over a decade ago, the UK was the first place we went where we knew something was happening. So it’s always great to get back and feel that love, and just savour it – plus, we get to play some of the new material! We’re mixing things up with production on this run and trying to up our game. We’ve always been a band that has focussed more on the songs, relying on the music, but we’re slowly adding in more of a visual element as well, which is always exciting.”

You’re playing some of the biggest venues our country has to offer again – do you consider this a chance to show the UK that you’re ready to headline festivals, like Download?
“Yeah, it’s pretty amazing getting to return to somewhere like [London’s] O2 Arena. I remember the first time we played there – it was such an amazing venue. The way that room is designed sonically, I feel like all the boxes are checked for it to be a good experience for both the fans and the bands. We’re jonesing to get back there, for sure.”

You’ve been playing a nice chunk of the new material on your European run. How have they been going down?
“It’s been really nice to see. We try to do at least four songs off the record at every show, but I feel like any more than that is a lot of new material to digest. We do Wouldn’t You Rather and we’ve started doing Native Son, Godspeed, and then we do one of the different ones from the record, and change which one we do each night.”

Sonically, the new record has you experimenting somewhat. Has that experience laid the foundations for future Alter Bridge albums?
“It’s a good question. I don’t know where we will end up going musically from this point forward, but we have a certain hallmark to our sound that will always be there. We will always have the big riff and the melody – they are very crucial elements to our sound. I feel that if we put something out and we strayed from that, I just don’t think that would be in our DNA as a band. It’s a few years down the road before the next record, but we’ll see where, collectively, our creative juices take us.”

Speaking of records, this year marks the 15th anniversary of Alter Bridge and your debut album, One Day Remains. Have you had much time to reflect on hitting that milestone?
“Yeah, and it’s crazy! It’s made us aware, first and foremost, how lucky we are to still be doing it. Honestly, when we put out One Day Remains, there was a voice at the back of my mind was saying, ‘This will be only the record we do.’ I know the music industry is tough, and it’s a fickle industry, so I was just totally cool with having the opportunity to do the one record, tour the world and then put it in the journal (laughs). Fast forward 15 years later and it’s become a full-on entity, so it’s kinda mind-blowing. It makes me feel grateful on the one hand, but then also think of how fricking quick time goes on the other hand! It just seems like it was the blink of an eye.”

Finally, what do Myles Kennedy and Alter Bridge get up to on their days off on tour?
“I’m such a nerd that I generally just sit in my hotel room playing guitar, as does Mark [Tremonti, guitar]! What’s that coffee chain called? Pret A Manger? I totally butcher the way it’s said… I actually really like that place, so I always try to find one of those, as I know I will always find something super healthy that will taste good. That place has become my UK go-to!”
