Yeah, a song doesn't have to have that heavy chugging to be metal. The old stuff was just like you described. More moody than heavy. Thrash was what started putting speed into metal.

Basically the faster, heavier songs like Addicted to Pain and the riffs from Peace Is Broken and Farther Than The Sun are more inspired by old thrash bands like Metallica, Megadeth, etc. Songs like Fortress that still have heavy moments but are slower and more moody have more classic metal influences.

^ This. Songs like Fortress, Cry of Achilles and Calm the Fire are really inspired by bands like Black Sabbath, Queensryche, Iron Maiden and Alice in Chains.

I love the whole album.... But I have tried so hard to like Calm the Fire. Its just not going to happen anytime soon.

To me AB needs to stay on the metal/hard rock/Instrumental/progressive/melodic route.
