Why these broken video screens?

I dont get these video screens or whatever you call them that AB are using on this tour.

I mean if you're gonna finally use some imagery and screens, etc., why not go with one big flat screen or 2 big flat screens, one on each side of the stage?

With this broken up thing into about 6 vertical slabs is awkward and not easy on the eyes. I mean you cant see any continuity, and really I couldnt tell much in the way of content.

Not only that, in the beginning when they display the band name, you awkwardly have parts of the letters not showing, or sometimes 2 letters smushed on one of the slabs.

Anybody know what the thinking was in using these? Never really seen this done by any other band.

You must not see a lot of bands then. This is a very common type of set-up.

I've saw this exact set-up of the broken video screens for both Sevendust and Skillet sets at the Wiltern Theater back in September (sans the ceiling screens). Sevendust only used their album cover of All I See is War on their screen as more of a backdrop, which can be a bit awkward to look at. Maybe, when AB was doing the co-headlining tour with Skillet and saw what their set-up was going to be, AB decided that they needed more visual presentations and thought this was the best approach.

The name "Alter Bridge" looks awful on those screens.

You can put lights between the gaps in the screens and also have a great light show as well as just screens with a couple of lights surrounding it. I agree words and one big image can look a bit awkward, but I think for setting a scene it can work quite well. I definitely prefer it to just a fabric backdrop.

It's just an artistic thing. Where it drops some stuff in the continuity of the image, it adds something by the split images. Some will like it. Some won't.

I imagine it's easier to pack multiple smaller screens in a truck than one large screen, though. Maybe those large ones disassemble?

Yeah they do. they're a bit fiddly, and you require more packaging and cabling, but they do break down.

The problem aren't the screens, it's what's projected on the screens

It's Britspeak, you illiterate cretin!

I had to look up the word "fiddly".

I like it. I'm going to start using it in everyday speech and enjoy the confused expressions from others.

I think it's a pretty cool effect and most of the visuals they chose work well, for example the swelling waves during "Waters Rising". Some of the graphics even seem tailored for the setup, like the stacked TVs and the pillars of lights they use on a couple songs. Adding the second row of screens above the band during the European run added quite a bit of scale to their production. I do agree that the Alter Bridge logo looks pretty wonky when displayed across multiple screens though.

Artistic choice aside, I'm curious about the practical considerations between multiple skinny screens versus on large one. A couple stadium-sized shows I've been to used one giant screen behind the band, which actually was not self-lit, but essentially just a giant hanging mesh tarp backlit by a super powerful projector. That actually seems like a simpler setup but I imagine those projectors are super expensive.

Queensryche had 4 of these screens on their stage set here: one on each side of the drum riser in the back and one each on the far right and left of the stage right at the front. Images were "broken up" if they were too wide for a single screen, or as they moved laterally across the 4, but it was a pretty neat effect and visual.

Wow. I really can't see AB ever going that big but it's cool to see what other artists are doing to be creative with their setups.

That's so damn cool looking. It actually kind of reminds me of the songbird from Bioshock Infinite.
